Welcome!
What is roller derby?
Roller derby is a competitive contact sport with no choreographing. Theatrics are part of the game, but nothing is fake or scripted. The game is played in heats or "jams" that can last up to two minutes. There are 2 thirty minute periods with an unlimited number of jams in each. Two teams play in each jam with five players in the rink for each team. This is called the "pack." Each pack starts with one pivot, one jammer, and three blockers.
On the whistle, the packs take off and the jammers fight their way through the pack in an attempt to become the lead jammer. After lapping the packs once, the jammers receive one point for each member of the opposing team that they pass. The lead jammer can call off the jam at any time.
